The Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Indo Global Mandiri (UIGM) held a scientific seminar as part of its 2nd anniversary celebrations on Saturday (September 19).
The seminar addressed a number of current health issues in South Sumatra, ranging from the impact of haze caused by forest and land fires to the problem of bullying in medical education.
Dr. Anang Tribowo, SpM(K), was one of the speakers who highlighted the importance of preventing bullying in medical education settings.
He emphasized that a culture of seniority that leads to violence should no longer be considered part of the character-building process for future doctors.
“We educate doctors not by pressuring them, but by guiding them,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Dr. M. Alif Faturahman, SpPD, K-PMK, FINASIM, presented material on the pathophysiology and the impact of exposure to forest and land fire particles on acute exacerbations of respiratory tract conditions.
He explained that long-term exposure to smoke can worsen the condition of patients with a history of chronic respiratory disorders. “Even the smallest particles can have a significant impact on the lungs,” he said.
On the same occasion, Dr. Sarmudianta, M.Epid, discussed community respiratory health mitigation strategies based on an Early Warning System in areas prone to forest and land fires. According to him, an early warning system is a crucial step in reducing the incidence of health problems caused by haze. “Early detection saves more lives than responding after a crisis has occurred,” he concluded.
