The Rector of Universitas Indo Global Mandiri (UIGM), Dr. H. Marzuki Alie, delivered three important messages to scholarship recipients on Monday (Oct. 26).
He addressed these remarks to new students receiving either the KIP-K scholarship or the IGM Foundation scholarship. “This scholarship is a ticket to breaking the cycle of poverty,” he said before hundreds of scholarship recipients.
For reference, there are 268 KIP-K scholarship recipients, with 45–60 percent of the funding provided by the government and 55–40 percent by the foundation. The IGM Foundation scholarships consist of full scholarships for 34 students, including 4 international students; partial scholarships for 62 students; and scholarships for the children of IGM faculty or staff for 4 students.

“Don’t be proud just because you’re a scholarship recipient. Aim to be the one giving scholarships one day,” said Marzuki.

Marzuki then recalled a personal experience from 52 years ago. In 1974, he was unable to attend college because there were no scholarships available. He then took a detour by taking a pilot’s exam and planning to go to Germany, but none of that came to pass. “That’s why I’m standing here today—to make sure you don’t end up like I did in 1974,” he said.

The third message he shared was for the scholarship recipients to uphold the good name of their parents and the university. “This opportunity doesn’t come twice, so take the trust your parents and the university have placed in you very seriously,” he concluded. (ata)
