Freshmen at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) of Universitas Indo Global Mandiri (UIGM) participated in an anatomy lab orientation as part of the 2026 Campus Life Orientation Program for Freshmen (PKKMB) on Tuesday (September 15).
This activity was one of the main events for the third cohort of UIGM FK students who are just beginning their academic journey. UIGM FK faculty member Dr. Theofilus Aswadi, AIFO-K, explained that the anatomy lab orientation is a crucial moment in medical education.
“This is one of the most important stages they will go through during their medical education,” he said.
During this activity, new students have the opportunity to study human anatomy firsthand, using cadavers as the primary learning tool. This method aligns with the fundamental motto of medical education, *mortui vivos docent*, which means “the dead teach the living.”
Theofilus emphasized that this process serves as a crucial foundation for students in understanding the structure of the human body before entering the clinical phase of their education. “That motto reminds students that the field of medicine is built upon respect for the contributions of body donors,” he explained.
He added that the medical program is one of the most competitive, so students selected for this third cohort are expected to take full advantage of every learning opportunity. The introduction to the anatomy lab from the very beginning of the program is intended to gradually prepare students both mentally and academically.
“Students need to understand that the medical profession demands both academic and mental readiness,” he said.
Theofilus hopes that this first experience in the anatomy lab will serve as valuable preparation for the new students as they continue their medical education. He emphasized the importance of respect and discipline in every learning process in the lab. “Respect every learning process, because it will shape your character as future doctors,” he concluded.
