Celebrating Sriwijaya’s History, IGM Visual Communication Design Students Create Dozens of Neon Box Logos

Universitas Indo Global Mandiri (IGM) held a handover ceremony for the Brand Identity Style Guide (GSM) and a supporting media application titled “Sriwijaya Visual Identity.”

The event also featured M Randika Pranata, S.T., M.Si, Chair of the South Sumatra Regional Chapter of Gekrafs, as a guest speaker.

Yosef Yulius, S.Sn., M.Sn., the instructor for the Visual Communication Design (DKV) course at Universitas IGM, said the activity was an outcome of the DKV 1 course. “In DKV 1, students work on a project—designing a logo—and the final result is applied to a neon sign and business cards to be submitted to the client,” he said.

All the logos designed by the students, he continued, highlight the name “Sriwijaya” across various business sectors and institutions in Palembang. According to Yosef, there are many brands bearing the “Sriwijaya” name in Palembang, but their visual identities do not yet reflect the historical significance of Sriwijaya. “We want the Sriwijaya brands we create to be consistent with the historical significance of Sriwijaya,” he said.

A total of nearly 50 logo designs in the form of neon boxes were handed over to clients during the event. These neon boxes will be installed directly at the clients’ business locations or institutions as part of the university’s community outreach efforts. “To ensure the benefits are felt immediately, these neon boxes will be installed directly at the clients’ locations,” he said.

Yosef confirmed that all the works are original designs created by the students. The clients receiving the neon boxes include not only MSMEs but also corporations (PTs), government and private institutions—ranging from commercial and non-commercial entities to service providers.

“These are all original works by our students, and our client base is very diverse,” he concluded. (andhiko ta)
