Exploring Career Prospects in Design from an Early Age: SMKN 1 Keluang Takes Students on a Campus Visit to IGM University

Dozens of students from the Visual Communication Design (VCD) program at SMK Negeri 1 Keluang, Sekayu, Musi Banyuasin, visited the Faculty of Government and Cultural Studies at Indo Global Mandiri University (IGM) on Thursday (April 9, 2026).

This activity is an integral part of the school’s curriculum, designed to bridge students’ understanding between classroom theory and the realities of the business and industrial world (DUDI).

The Head of the VCD Program at SMK Negeri 1 Keluang, Suhendi, S.Kom., stated that this visit carries a significant mission to broaden students’ horizons regarding the future of the design profession.

In addition to seeking technical information regarding advanced-level curricula, the school placed strong emphasis on understanding career opportunities for Visual Communication Design graduates in the era of digital transformation. The selection of UIGM as the visit destination was based on the alignment of the programs offered and the reputation of its state-of-the-art facilities in supporting students’ visual talents.

“We want to ensure our students have a concrete understanding that the visual skills they are currently honing hold high economic value and are part of a broad professional ecosystem,” said Suhendi.

To provide a more memorable experience, the students and teachers from SMKN 1 Keluang were taken on a campus tour to get an in-depth look at the laboratory facilities and production studios at UIGM. Interestingly, the students were also given a special opportunity to enter classrooms to directly observe the learning process of Visual Communication Design (DKV) students. This interaction is expected to motivate the students to complete their secondary education with the best possible results so that they will be ready to excel in the world of higher education.

Meanwhile, Vice Rector III of Indo Global Mandiri University, Dr. Tien Yustini, M.Si., personally welcomed the group, expressing high appreciation for the school’s consistency in introducing the university environment from an early age.

In her remarks, she emphasized that the Visual Communication Design (DKV) curriculum at UIGM has been designed to be highly relevant to the current needs of the creative industry.

“Consistency in honing aesthetic skills and technological literacy is the key for students to be able to meet the challenges of the creative industry, which is undergoing very dynamic changes,” she concluded. (andhiko ta)
